Wisconsin Rapids, June 7, 2010 (PRESS RELEASE)- There are still 65 games to focus on, but for now the Wisconsin Rapids Rafters can step back and savor win number one, a 3-0 victory over the Green Bay Bullfrogs.
Rafters pitching, and a few clutch hits, won the day for Wisconsin Rapids. After Chris Green spun together five scoreless to start the game, four Rafters relievers kept the Bullfrogs at bay over the final four innings of play.
Green allowed just three hits in his five inning start, on his way to becoming the first winning pitcher in franchise history."I leaned heavily on my fastball today and got some great defensive help," Green said. "We have a lot of good athletes on this team and we'll have something good when it all comes together."
Brad Douthit, Drew Farrell and Dan Johnson worked scoreless innings before Steve Godawa threw a hitless ninth to record the franchise's first save.
The clutching hitting began in the third inning. Craig Shul walked to lead off the inning, but still stood on third with two outs before Justin Jerschele laced a single to center to put the Rafters up 1-0.
In the sixth inning Michael Smith and Ken Gregory worked two out walks. Brian Embery then grounded a single to center, sending Smith tearing around third. The throw from center beat Smith to the plate but the speedy outfielder slid head first around the catcher, tapping home plate as he went by to make it 2-0. Kody Koback then singled home Gregory from second to set the final margin at 3-0.
Wisconsin Rapids travels to Green Bay for a rematch tomorrow at 7:05. Damon McCormick is scheduled to start for the Rafters against the Bullfrog's Riley Tichner. Catch all the action on AM 1320 WFHR or online at WFHR.com.
