Rafters Prevail in Pitchers Duel With Bucks

WISCONSIN RAPIDS (WAOW) - For the second time in a week the Wisconsin Rapids Rafters (9-16) won a 1-0 contest with their third shut-out of the season Thursday night against the Waterloo Bucks (15-13).

The action of Thursday's pitcher's duel came to a head in the top of the ninth with the Rafters leading 1-0 and looking for the final three outs. After retiring six straight to start his relief appearance Jesse Arreola walked the first two batters and after a sac bunt, new reliever Dan Johnson hit a batter to load the bases. But Johnson induced a harmless fielder's choice ground out and then recorded a three pitch strike out to send the Rafters to victory.

Johnson picked up his second save of the season with his intense inning of relief. "In any outing you can't get too high or be too low," Johnson said. "I just had to go out there and throw like I've thrown in the back-yard my whole life."

Starter Matt Baudino ran his scoreless inning streak to 12 with six innings of two hit baseball, notching four strike outs. Baudino walked four on the evening but had success pitching to contact. "You can't try to be too fine out there, or worry about placing each pitch perfectly," Baudino said. "And I can't say enough about the job Dan [Johnson] and Jesse[Arreola] did along with the rest of our staff all season."

Brian Embery gave the Rafters their slimmest of margins with an RBI single in the second inning. Jenzen Torres worked a walk and moved to second on a Michael Smith single. Embery's low liner to left snuck away from the left fielder long enough to allow Torres to motor home. Smith chalked up two hits on the night running his multi-hit game streak to four.
