Woodchucks Swept by Bombers

BATTLE CREEK, MI - The Wisconsin Woodchucks (17-14) were again stymied by the Battle Creek Bombers' (12-18) pitchers, as the Bombers defeated the ‘Chucks 4-3 Saturday night to complete the three game sweep.  The loss, combined with an Eau Claire Express win, leaves the Woodchucks 2 games out of first place in the south division with just four games left to play in the first half of the season.

The Woodchucks took the early lead, as they did in all three ballgames at CO Brown Stadium, when Sharif Othman doubled home two in the top of the second inning.  Othman finished with just the one hit, but was batting when all 3 Woodchuck runs scored.  Don Lisi (3-1) gave a strong start to the Chucks, but allowed an unearned run in the second and an earned run in the third, and the game was tied 2-2 through the middle innings.

With no outs in the bottom of the sixth, Josh Lyon strode to the plate with a runner on and drilled an 0-2 Lisi pitch to right field for his 4th home run of the season and a 4-2 Bombers lead.  Joey Battestelli (4-1), the Bombers starter, was still in the ballgame at the time, at finished with 7 IP, just 5 hits allowed, 2 ER, and 6 strikeouts while earning the win.

Chad Jasman came in the relieve Battestelli in the eighth, but ran into trouble in the ninth, allowing the first two ‘Chucks to reach.  Stan Eldridge pulled Jasman for Chris Howard, who allowed one run to score before striking out pinch hitter Ryan Fleming with the tying run on first base to lock down Battle Creek's win, and Howard's third save.

The Woodchucks return to action Monday, hosting Green Bay at 6:35 p.m.
