Chucks snap six-game skid with 7-6 win over Waterloo to end first half

Posted:

Wausau, WI  -  July 8th, 2010 (PRESS RELEASE)  -   The Wisconsin Woodchucks finally ended a 6 game losing streak and finished the first half on a good note, defeating the Waterloo Bucks 7-6.  The Woodchucks would finish the first half above .500 at 18-17, while Waterloo would finish 19-16.

The ‘Chucks would finally get some clutch two out hitting, and take a 3-0 lead in the first inning.  Eric Fritz would walk with two outs, before Pat Terry, Travis Whitmore, and Brandon King would follow and smack a single and two doubles.

They'd give it back right away in the top of the second, as a pair of singles and a ground rule double would make the score 3-1 with two on and two outs for Landon Anderson.  Anderson would hit a routine groundball to Rob Lind at second base, while two runs would come around and score to tie the game.  Lind would be immediately pulled after the inning's completion for Patrick Claussen.

Starting pitchers Bryce Shafer and Paul Twining would respectively sail through the second, third, and fourth innings before things would get interesting in the fifth.

With one out in the top of the 5th frame, Ryan Reiger would smack a monster home run to deep right field to break the tie 4-3.  Shafer would work out of the inning following the solo jack, and set things up for the ‘Chucks to take the lead back in the bottom of the frame.

Patrick Claussen would lead off the 5th inning with a strikeout, but the wild pitch would allow him to take first base.  Eric Fritz would follow with a single, before a Chris Amezquita sacrifice bunt and a groundout.  With runners on second and third, Travis Whitmore hit a scathing ball at the second baseman, scoring two runs off an error.  Whitmore would then steal second base before Brandon King would single him home to make the score 6-4 Woodchucks.

Corey Hall would come on in relief in the sixth, and allow two consecutive doubles to cut the lead to one run.  Hall would then journey through the seventh and eighth innings to get the game to Anthony Drobnick, after Brandon King would score an insurance run to make the score 7-5.

Anthony Drobnick would come on in the ninth and try to close the game.  Drobnick would make things interesting, giving up a seeing-eye single, two walks, and run- however two timely strikeouts would notch Drobnick the save and the Woodchucks a happy ending to the first half.

The South division second half begins tomorrow night, as the Woodchucks travel to Madison to begin an away-home-away series.
