Rafters Snap Five-Game Skid at Waterloo

(WAOW) - Whether it was residual magic from a trip to the actual site of the Field of Dreams movie, or the five hits combined from the one and two hitters, the Wisconsin Rapids Rafters beat the Waterloo Bucks 7-4 Saturday night to even their second half record at 1-1.

Two and three hitters Evan Laude and Michael Smith had a monster combined game for the Rafters. Smith drove home four of the Rafters seven runs, the most RBI in one game by a single Rafter in franchise history. "Really I had that success because Laude did such a great job setting the table all night," Smith said. "With him on base four times it just came down to executing everything the coaches have told us all season." Laude singled twice, walked, doubled and scored three times, another first for one Rafter in a single game.

A Bucks error in the first inning, on a Laude single, helped the Rafters to a 1-0 lead. Then, trailing 3-2 headed into the fifth, Brad Hallberg reached on an error to start the inning. Laude's second single of the night put runners on the corners and Smith delivered an RBI base hit. A third Bucks miscue brought Laude in to score and the Rafters took the lead for good at 4-2.

Chris Green started and allowed three runs through four innings. After Green left, Jesse Arreolla threw three scoreless innings and racked up five strike-outs, while the Rafters worked away offensively. Steve Godawa allowed a run in the eighth but pitched a perfect ninth to nail down the 7-4 final.

Aside from the heroics of Laude and Smith back to back in the line-up, Ryan Palermo and Brian Embery provided some clutch two out production for the Rafters. Hitting sixth and seventh in the line-up, Palermo doubled then Embery singled in the fourth to push across a key second run for the Rafters.
