Rafters Blank Mallards for 2nd Win of 2nd Half

WISCONSIN RAPIDS (WAOW) - With their offense sputtering the Wisconsin Rapids Rafters cashed in another stellar pitching performance by their staff to shut out the Madison Mallards 3-0 Monday night.

Mitch Running started for the Rafters (2-2) and battled through six scoreless innings. The righty walked four and put a Mallard on in each inning but he picked off one runner and his catcher Jenzen Torres caught two runners stealing to limit Madison's chances.

Harking back to the closers of old Steve Godawa picked up his fifth save of the season with three scoreless innings of relief. Godawa came on in the seventh with a runner on first and no outs, but induced a fielder's choice and double play to end the inning.

Godawa is most comfortable pitching only one inning, but the confidence Manager Scott Laverty has showed in his ability has helped Godawa to work multiple innings. "Lav told me there is no reason, with my three pitches, that I couldn't be effective multiple times through the line-up," Godawa said. "It also comes down to just having a positive mentality from inning to inning to know I can have success in longer outings."

The Rafters did not have a base runner off of Mallard's starter Matt LaMothe until the fifth. LaMothe couldn't come up with Evan Laude's ground ball back to the mound, opening the door just a crack and the Rafters ran through. After a fielder's choice to force Laude, Quinton Perry doubled off the wall in center to score Ryan Palermo and put the Rafters up 1-0.

Laude set the table again for two key insurance runs in the seventh. The Rafters first baseman walked to lead off the inning and moved up to second on a pass ball. Brad Hallberg singled him to third before Perry struck out. After an intentional walk to Jenzen Torres, eighth hitter Evan Peters bounced a base hit just over the glove of the short-stop into left-field to score one more. Torres eventually scored on a second Mallards error to set the final margin at 3-0.
