Wisconsin Rapids, WI – July 26, 2010 (PRESS RELEASE)- Defensive miscues plagued the Wisconsin Rapids Rafters in a 3-2 loss to the Waterloo Bucks Monday night. All three of the Waterloo runs came home unearned as the result of three Rafters errors.
The Bucks took a 1-0 lead in the top of the second thanks to the Rafters first error on the night. With runners at second and third Jenzen Torres sailed a throw to second trying to nab a runner stealing, but instead allowed the runner from third to cross the plate for a 1-0 Waterloo lead.
Matt Baudino's only blemish through his six innings turned out to be that one unearned run. The lefty struck out five, walked one and allowed just four hits in his appearance. Brandon Van Dam came on to work a scoreless seventh, but in the eighth the Rafters defense struggled again.
Brad Hallberg fielded a grounder cleanly, but his throw to first sailed wide and allowed the lead runner to reach. After a sacrifice moved a runner to second with one out, Ryan Palermo had a grounder trickle under his glove at third to put runners at first and second. The very next batter rolled a ground ball single up the middle to tie the game at two. Van Dam struck out the next batter to hold the runners and the tie but Brad Douthit allowed a walk and a single to bring home the go ahead run and set the deficit at 3-2.
With two hits in the bottom of the ninth the Rafters tried to mount a rally but fell despite racking up double digit hits for the fourth time in five games. Jenzen Torres collected a pair of singles, a double and scored two runs to help lead the team offensively.
