Extra Innings With The Woodchucks: Mitchell Beacom

Posted:

WAUSAU (WAOW) - Mitchell Beacom has been a gem on the mound for the Chucks so far this year.

He knows what it means to compete at the top level as well as he was part of UCLA's team this season that went to the College World Series championship game in Omaha. The Bruins eventually fell to champion South Carolina, but being a part of that is something Beacom will never forget.

Says Mitchell Beacom, "We always talked about it that we wanted to be special, we worked so hard because we wanted to do something that no one else has done at our school, and to lose that game was disappointing, but we'll come back next year and we'll have the same mission."

Says Guido Aspeitia, "It's important to have guys with that big game experience and know that you know when you put them in that big game situation that they can take a deep breath and get after it."

His winner's mentality has certainly paid off this season, in over 12 innings pitched coming into this week, Beacom has just over a .7 ERA.

Says Beacom, "The mentality is just like, attack them, and if they hit you, they hit you, but that's baseball."

Says Aspeitia, "It's not just balls and strikes, it's the intangibles of the game and when you build a baseball team, it's all about the intangibles."

And if you haven't noticed, he also has some size working in his favor, Beacom stands at 6'8" on the hill.

Says Beacom, "First thing I do is look at the hitter, and I hope he's scared of me. I just try to throw strikes and let me stuff do what it does."

Says Aspeitia, "It's the fact of how he throws the baseball and how he wraps it around his back, and that you just don't see the ball coming out of his hands."

He hopes to continue his hot play when he returns to the Bruins for his redshirt junior season. After that the pros are on his mind, he was drafted in the 36th round by the Royals last month. Reporting in Wausau, Russ Owens, Newsline nine sports.
