Rafters Re-sign Left-handed Pitcher

Posted:

WISCONSIN RAPIDS (Press Release) - The Rafters now have their top two strikeout pitchers from the inaugural season back in the fold.  Rafters officials announced today that LHP Jesse Arreola (Cal Baptist) will return to Wisconsin Rapids for a second season, joining left-handed returners Brad Douthit and Tommy Organ on the pitching staff.  Currently a sophomore, the crafty lefty was a key contributor on the mound for the 2010 Inaugural Season squad.

Last summer, Arreola appeared in 20 games, mostly out of the bullpen, before sliding into the rotation for 4 starts near the end of the season.  He posted a 3-4 record to go along with a deceiving 5.20 ERA and struck out 49 batters in 53.2 innings of work.  His strikeout total was good enough for second on the team to another player returning for the 2011 season, Tommy Organ.  Arreola's best pitching performance of the season occurred in his last appearance at home, after transitioning from bullpen to starting duty.  In 7.1 innings against the Battle Creek Bombers on August 14th, Arreola allowed 8 hits and only one walk, while striking out a season-high 14 batters.  He allowed 4 earned runs in the, otherwise, dominant performance.  With that achievement, Arreola now holds the record for most strikeouts in a game by a Rafters player.

"Jesse set an impressive record in Rafters history when he recorded 14 strikeouts in a game against Battle Creek last summer," said Rafters GM Liz Kern.  "He is a great competitor and we look forward to having him back for a second year."

Last spring, as a freshman at Cal Baptist, Arreola appeared in 24 games while making 4 starts for the Lancers. He registered a 7-0 record to go along with a 3.67 ERA, and also recorded 3 saves. Over a span of 54 innings, Arreola struck out 43 batters while only surrendering one home run.

Arreola is a 2009 graduate of Riverside Patriot High School in California. As a senior, he carried an 8-5 record to go along with a 1.50 ERA and struck out 108 batters in 74.2 innings pitched. As a junior, he went 10-2 with a 1.27 ERA and struck out 104 batters in 77 innings, while leading his team to the CIF semifinals. His impressive numbers lead him to being named League Pitcher of the year as both a junior and senior as well as being named All-League and All-CIF in both years. He is currently majoring in Business Administration at Cal Baptist.
