Rafters fall to Madison

Posted:

Madison - Trailing all afternoon, the Wisconsin Rapids Rafters tied the game with two outs in their final at bat, but could never take a lead in extras as the Madison Mallards won 5-4 in ten innings.

A single run in the sixth and a Cody Koback RBI single plated two in the seventh to bring the Rafters within a run.  Curtis Frisbie then keyed the Rafters ninth inning attack with a pinch hit single leading off inning. A hit batter and fielder's choice had Frisbie at third with two outs. With a two strike count on Kyle Peterson, a pass ball back to the screen allowed Frisbie to sprint down the line for the tie.

In the bottom of the ninth reliever Joie Dunyon worked around a lead double and an intentional pass. Dunyon struck out two and induced a foul pop with the winning run at third to send the game to extra frames. In the midst of the ninth inning drama, the base umpire ejected Rafters manager John Martin arguing a safe call at third base.

The Rafters threatened in the top of the tenth putting the lead runner on, but could not push him beyond second base. In the bottom half of the tenth Kevin Wild came on to try and send it to the eleventh. Wild got off on the wrong foot when he issued a lead walk to the Mallards Andrew Barna. Barna promptly stole second and went to third on a wild pitch. Then with one out, pinch hitter Tyler Jones grounded a ball under the glove of Brandon Hohl at third to score the winning run.

Michael Russo started his first game for the Rafters and pitched five innings allowing three runs on five hits with four walks and a pair of strike-outs. Tommy Danczyk allowed a run in one relief inning while Skyler Debilzen and Dunyon held the Mallards in check over the final three innings of regulation. The loss is Wild's third of the season and drops the Rafters to 3-15 while setting the Mallards at 11-7.
