Rafters Earn Extra-Innings Win Over Waterloo

Posted:

WISCONSIN RAPIDS (Press Release) - Be it thanks to the luck from the Kelly green uniforms they wore for Summertime St. Patty's day, or just their never quit tenacity, the Wisconsin Rapids Rafters fought to an 8-7 victory over the Waterloo Bucks capped by a Cody Koback walk-off single in the tenth.

The winning rally began with a one out walk. Kyle Peterson drew a free pass as the second batter of the tenth. Then with two outs, Bobby Martin grounded a hard hopper to the hole at short. The short-stop gloved the ball and fired high to first, sending Peterson to third. Koback, the very next batter, fell behind 0-2, but then lofted a sure base hit the opposite way to right ending the game in Rafters victory.

"I feel like I let two hittable pitches go by early in the at-bat so I really was then just looking for something to put into play with two strikes," Koback said after the victory. "That's something I never got a chance to do at Witter, win it on a hit, it was exciting."

Trailing 5-1 early, the Rafters tied the game two different times en route to Koback's extra inning heroics. Peterson, with a sac fly already in the books in the fifth inning, crushed a lead-off home run in the eighth to pull his club within one. A homer got the Rafters on the board in the second when Evan Stermer launched a solo blast into the wind in centerfield. Stermer and Koback both closed the night with three hits.

Errors behind him spelled a short outing for Nestor Bautista, but despite throwing extra pitches in multiple frames the lefty still worked through five, allowing four earned runs on six hits, keeping his club in the game. Jacob Doyle allowed the seventh run to the Bucks in two thirds inning of relief. Skyler Debilzen and Joie Dunyon however held Waterloo to just three hits over the final four innings. Dunyon takes the win, moving his record to 1-1, as the Rafters move to 6-18 on the season.

Game two of the short set with the Bucks is set for Tuesday night at 7:05.
