(WAOW) - The Wausau West hockey team began its state title defense Thursday as boys' regional hockey playoffs heated up all over the state.

The Warriors scored four times in the first period and added three more goals in the third to walk away with a 7-0 win.

Second-seed DC Everest couldn't overcome a slow start against Lakeland, falling 3-2. The Thunderbirds scored twice in the opening period and moved on to face Northland Pines, who beat Wausau East, 5-2.

On the girls' side, the Central Wisconsin Storm had little trouble advancing with a 9-0 win over Lakeland.
