Late-season snowshoeing

WAUSAU (WAOW) -

Snowshoeing is a great way to experience the outdoors, even in areas where the snow depth is too low for snowmobiling, according to Robb Shepherd, manager at Shepherd and Schaller Sporting Goods in Wausau.

"I always tell folks if you can walk you can snowshoe.  It's just a great activity to get out and enjoy the winter of Wisconsin" Shepherd told Newsline 9.

With temperatures in March that average above freezing during the day, snowshoeing late in the season allows adventurers the opportunity to use the snow base on the ground, but avoid the colder temperatures of the early winter.

"They can snowshoe at any depth" Shepherd said.  "Snowshoeing provides better traction so when you're out in those types of areas that don't have a lot of snow depth it just adds a bit of stability so you're not slipping and sliding so easily" he continued.

Shepherd says snowshoeing is a workout.  Gearing up for even an easy walk, adventurers should wear layers, because working up a sweat is easy.

"You're moving; you're very active so you want to almost under-dress for it because you're going to be working up quite a work out" he said.

In addition to wearing breathable clothing, Shepherd advises wearing light-weight footwear.  Keeping feet dry is a priority, but wearing heavy boots defeats the purpose of wearing aluminum-based snowshoes.

Shepherd and Schaller Sporting Goods in Wausau rents snowshoes for $10 daily, per pair.

Central Wisconsin has many snowshoe courses for all levels.
