Wisconsin's place in the Circus World

Posted:

BARABOO (WAOW)—Though the excitement of the circus may be hard to match, workers at Circus World Museum say as they prepare for the opening of the summer entertainment season, it's show time.

"We bring something from history back to life" restoration craftsman Harold Burdick told Newsline 9.

Burdick oversees the maintenance and refurbishment of Circus World's prized wagons.

The museum is home to the world's largest collection of historic circus wagons.  In the 1900's the arrival of large, colorful and ornately decorated wagons in a new city became the signature symbol that the circus was coming to town.

Circus World provides many live entertainment venues.  In May 2012 illusionist Tristan Crist will move into the spotlight on a new custom-built stage for his magic act.  That's something Crist says is both exciting and historically relevant.

"The Ringling Brothers started out with a variety show and so the circus, variety shows and magic really play hand in hand" he said.

Though open year-round, Circus World's summer season starting on May 19th brings live animals, circus demonstrations and a multitude of live entertainment options.

Officials say the museum is built where the Ringling Brothers made inroads in creating the "Greatest Show on Earth."  But the focus of their efforts is simple: be a place families can enjoy spending time together at.

"In the case of the circus, it's extra exciting, extra colorful, and we're just glad they can do that here" Ringmaster Dave SaLoutos said.
