Rosholt horse farm gets global attention

Caring for horses in need of an adoptive home is the job of a lifetime, according to Mary Hetzel of St. Francis Horse Rescue and Retirement Farm.

"I had the horse bug when I was a very little child, and so I'm living the dream here, and this is it" Hetzel told Newsline 9.

St. Francis Horse Rescue and Retirement Farm, 7548 Boulder Lane, Rosholt, is a non-profit operation currently caring for 36 animals.

The farm works to find adoptive homes for horses that have been left to the farm in need of care.

"With the changes in the economy, I think it's wonderful that people have an alternative place for their horses to go if they lose their farm" farm volunteer Ann Stern said.  "When you go to a horse rescue their main idea is to find that horse a permanent home.  And they try to match you up with the perfect horse."

St. Francis Farm has accepted horses from as far away as Israel.

Stern says the farm's mission of finding adoptive homes for horses is a noble one.  But it also works well for people who love the animals, but don't have the time or monetary resources to care for one of their own.

"They can always use volunteers, and even just to come out and play with the horses and brush them, it's really great" Stern said.
