May Jefferson Award Winner: Joyce Hanson

For Joyce Hanson, volunteering is a way of life.

In May, the party started when she began playing her accordion for senior citizens meeting at the Aging and Disability Resource Center lunch program. "I play a lot of old songs," Hanson said. "It brings back memories and I think that's what they like"

By the smiles on their faces, they liked what they heard.

Hanson is a self-taught musician, playing  the accordion  and several other instruments by ear. She often wears bright holiday or seasonal costume as  she shares her musical talents in schools, veterans centers and retirement homes.

"They like polka music and she comes in dressed as Miss Claus," said Mary Ann Sankey of the Aging and Disability Resource Center. "They really like her."

Plaques and certificates show some of the organizations that have honored Hanson for sharing her time and talents, from volunteering in schools on drug awareness programs for children to playing in a municipal band.
At 76, Hanson has had both knees and one replaced and wears a heart monitor but she has no plans to slow down. "as long as am upright as long as they will let me in," Hanson chuckled.
