Korean War veteran meets new friend

After a day of touring the memorials in Washington, D.C., local veterans of World War II and Korea have a special surprise waiting for them on their return flight to Wisconsin.

Mail call is a treasured tradition of the Never Forgotten Honor Flight, where members of the community write letters to local veterans, who then receive those letters on their Wisconsin-bound flight.

The Honor Flight is a non-profit group flying local vets to Washington, D.C. to see the memorials constructed in their honor.

And as the veterans started opening their letters on the plane, one stood out to Korean War veteran Billy Fergot of Edgar.

"I ran across the letters from school kids" Fergot told Newsline 9.  "I read one and I couldn't hold back; tears running down my cheeks" he continued.

The letter Fergot was referring to was written by 10-year-old Ethan Knetter of Edgar.  In the letter Knetter introduced himself, telling the Korean War veteran all of the things he enjoys doing.  That was a memorable moment to Fergot.

"All of the things he likes to do; and he's free to do them" was important to Fergot, who continued saying it was nice "seeing what we made possible still, by keeping freedom in our country."
