UPDATE: President Obama holds slim lead over Romney in Wisconsin in MU Law Poll

MILWAUKEE (WAOW) -

New polls out this week show the race for the White House is getting tighter. A new Marquette Law Poll shows President Barack Obama's lead in Wisconsin is now just three points above challenger Mitt Romney.

Less than two weeks after Romney added Wisconsin Congressman Paul Ryan to the GOP ticket, voters are reacting to the familiar face. A new Marquette Law Poll shows Romney inching closer to President Obama -- who now leads in the state by just three points.

Republicans in Marathon County predict it's going to get even closer.

"You're going to see a huge boost in poll numbers and once people hear nationally what Paul Ryan has to say, what Mitt Romney has to say, they're going to be pleasantly surprised," said Shannon Grabko, with the Marathon County Republican Party.

According to the poll, voters in the state are happy to see Ryan as the VP pick. 31% said he was an excellent choice. 27% said he's a "very good" addition. Republicans said Ryan is an asset because of his experience with the federal budget.

"With Wisconsin going through the recall election, with Scott Walker, that was all about the budget," said Grabko. "He was able to balance the budget here in our state."

But democrats said they don't think the GOP will be able to keep momentum going until election day.

"Usually with a national convention, and the republicans have theirs coming up, there is a little bit of a bump that comes with that. And that will subside," said Marathon County Democratic Party Chairman Jeff Johnson.

Some Marathon County democrats said Ryan's message won't resonate with voters and they still expect Obama to come out on top.

"I think people are tired of extremism," said Johnson. "The pick of Paul Ryan really pushes things even further out of people's comfort zone."

There is one thing both sides agree on though. Each said Wisconsin will play a major role in deciding who will be president.

The Marquette Poll isn't the only one out there. Another poll by Public Policy Polling shows Romney ahead of President Obama by a point. To find out more about the PPP, you can click on this link.

President Barack Obama has a 49-46 lead over Mitt Romney in Wisconsin. That's despite the addition of Congressman Paul Ryan (R-Janesville) to the Republican ticket.

The latest Marquette University Law School Poll was released Wednesday afternoon. It's the first MU Law Poll to be conducted since Ryan was named as Romney's vice presidential candidate on August 11.

While President Obama maintains his lead, it is smaller than it was two weeks ago when he led Romney 50-45.

In the race for U.S. Senate, Republican Tommy Thompson has a 50-41 lead over Democratic Congresswoman Tammy Baldwin.

Former Governor Thompson won a closely-contested Republican primary on August 14.

Newsline 9's Anna Carrera will have local reaction to the latest poll on Newsline 9 at 5 and 6 p.m.
