Shirley's House is a domestic violence shelter, which opened two years ago in Marshfield.

With the holiday season here, nearly all 7 bedrooms are filled with women and children.

Volunteer Eva Koopman says, "You just aren't aware of the magnitude of the problem until you get involved. There is a need and you think these things happen in small towns... not just in big cities."

Eva Koopman volunteers here during the overnight hours and serves on the board of directors. This is in addition to working full-time at a nursing home.

Eva says, "It is very rewarding.. just doing what I can and helping them it is very rewarding I'm not a registered counselor.. I just hear they're stories and help where I can."

The rewards come from knowing the shelter gives battered women a place to go to escape a dangerous situation and begin a new life. Eva says it's important,"They are just so thankful for the home.. some are overwhelmed."

For Eva the added bonus is that Shirley's House is named after her mother who's picture hangs in the living room.

It was Shirley Koopman's passion to see this shelter built. Unfortunately, she died, unexpectedly, four years ago.

That's when Eva stepped in to continue the mission, volunteering her time and ultimately changing lives.
