UPDATE: 88 crashes reported in Marathon County

Posted: Updated:

UPDATE - 88 crashes have been reported throughout Marathon County since 3am Thursday morning. Marathon County Emergency Management Director Steve Hagman says the crashes are described as vehicles in the ditch or hitting other vehicles.

He says five crashes with injuries were reported.  Each person was taken to a local hospital with non life-threatening injuries.

The Wisconsin department of transportation has issued a warning for areas throughout Wisconsin for high winds and slippery roads causing unsafe travel for large trucks and commercial vehicles.

However winds are increasing with gusts potentially in excess of 50 miles per hour. WisDOT officials say temperatures will also drop into the 20's during the day on Friday.

In the overnight hours, snow plowing and salting operations may be reduced for brief periods in some parts of the state. This is being done to give plow operators necessary rest.

The Marathon County Emergency Management Director says 55 crashes were reported in the county from 3am-10:15 a.m.  Steve Hagman says 2 crashes resulted in injuries.  But they were both non life-threatening.

Hagman says the City of Wausau reported 6 crashes over the same time period.  The 55 crashes were either vehicles going off the road or vehicles hitting other vehicles.

Hagman says people have been taking it slow on the roads.
