UPDATE: Strong wind and plunging temps expected tonight

Posted:

Temperatures will drop significantly tonight as a large cold front moves across the state.

The National Weather Service has several weather alerts active tonight for the Newsline 9 viewing area.  A Wind Chill Advisory runs until 9 a.m. Sunday. Counties under the advisory include Marathon, Wood, Portage, Clark, Taylor, Langlade, Lincoln, Oneida, Vilas, Price, Forest and Ashland Counties. Wind chill values could drop near -25 overnight Saturday into early Sunday morning.

Be sure to pay close attention to small children and the elderly, as they are more at risk to low wind chills when outdoors. Animals should be given shelter and a fresh, non-frozen water supply be made readily available at all times.

With cold air and strong winds moving over Lake Superior the chance for lake effect snow exists. The NWS has issued a Lake Effect Snow Advisory for Iron County until noon on Sunday. Areas in the advisory could see 3-7 inches by Sunday evening. Other areas in the Northwoods including Vilas County could see 1-3" by Sunday evening.  Vilas County is under a Winter Weather Advisory until 9 a.m. Sunday.

The cold front moving into the region is pulling some very chilly air from Canada toward the state. Once it arrives, the cold air is forecast to remain over the state for several days. Actual daytime high temperatures in Wausau are currently forecast to reach 6 degrees on Sunday, and just -1 on Monday.

Overnight low temperatures could dip as low as -15 on Monday night.

Though a significant amount of cold air will settle over the region, much of the extended forecast does not include a large amount of widespread snow. Apart from the lake effect snowbelt territory of northern Wisconsin, the next best opportunity for region-wide light snow does not come into the forecast until Thursday.
