UPDATE: NWS adds Wood and Portage Counties to freezing rain advisory

The National Weather Service office in Green Bay has added Wood and Portage Counties to the list of areas under a freezing rain advisory overnight until 9 a.m. Tuesday.

Their addition now means the entire Newsline 9 viewing area except Adams County is under a freezing rain advisory overnight.

Adams, Juneau and Jackson Counties will remain under a dense fog advisory until 9 a.m. Tuesday.

Motorists should plan on leaving additional time for the Tuesday morning commute hours and exercise extreme caution when driving overnight Monday as well.

Freezing rain is particularly dangerous to drive through. It falls through the atmosphere as a liquid rain drop, but when it hits surfaces that are at or below 32 degrees, it instantly freezes on contact. That can make roads very icy in a short period of time.

This weather scenario is compliments of unseasonably warm air that is pushing into Wisconsin from the southwest. Warm air is less dense that cold air and when the two meet, warm air rises over the cold air mass. With ample amounts of snow on the ground from Sunday's winter storm the surface is very cold. That is a good scenario for freezing rain to develop.

Temperatures by Tuesday afternoon are expected to rise into the mid 40s for much of the TV-9 viewing area. That will allow for rain showers through Tuesday night.

By late Tuesday and through Wednesday temperatures will once again fall as a major cold front pushes across the state. That will usher yet another Arctic air mass over Wisconsin that is forecast to remain with the area until at least Saturday.
