The February Jefferson Award Winner is Anton Anday. Anton is a volunteer with the Portage County Historical Society.
Anton volunteers at Heritage Park, a living piece of the past. The park has an old one room schoolhouse. Each year, hundreds of children from throughout Portage County visit the park. Anton often talks with them, sharing stories about the past, "It is important or us to understand our culture. If we do not know where we have been, how are we going to know where we are going?"
Anton is a retired history teacher. He says his work with the Society is a labor of love and he hopes it will inspire the younger generation.
"I hope they will carry on what we have started," he said.
The Society holds monthly meetings at various locations around the county. A brochure for the non-profit lists the following phone number to call for more information: 715-344-4423.
