Political leaders call on state to reconsider Skyward

WAUSAU (WAOW) - Political leaders are calling on the state to rethink its decision to award an education contract to an out-of-state company.

"I think it's a deep disappointment for all of Wisconsin to see a firm that's built it's roots here in our home state, and in the community of Stevens Point, and see them dealt a body blow by the Governor and his administration," said Chris Larson, (D)-Milwaukee

State Senate Democratic Minority Leader Chris Larson says the state will lose hundreds of jobs by choosing Infinite Campus over Stevens Point company, Skyward. Democratic State Representative Mandy Wright agrees.

"Skyward is really difficult to stomach and it will certainly affect our district here," said Wright.

These two legislators say the state should focus on creating jobs in Wisconsin-- not Minnesota.

"I think there are a lot of questions on this," said Larson "If people are concerned they should contact the Governor, because he has the ability to change this over the next few days.

We tried to reach Governor Walker for comment, but our calls were not immediately returned.

But the State Department of Administration says the decision was not political.

"The way Wisconsin has the process set up is so that it's free contracts are awarded based on merit, they're based upon what the proposer actually submitted and they are scored fairly and objectively," said Stephanie Marquis, DOA Spokesperson. "That's what we have in Wisconsin. It's meant to keep the political world out of those contracts so that all vendors have a fair opportunity at the contract."

A spokesperson for the DOA says the department is currently in negotiations with Infinite Campus. Skyward has to appeal the decision by next week. If it doesn't win that -- the company can take legal action.
