UPDATE: Victims identified in Town of Maine crash

TOWN OF MAINE (WAOW) - The Wisconsin State Patrol has named the victims in Thursday's fatal two car crash in the Town of Maine.

According to the press release Roy Kato, 34, Jenny Kato, 34, and Joshua Kato, 13, all of Oklahoma died in the crash. Brook Kato, 5, of Oklahoma was treated at Wausau's Aspirus hospital with non-life threatening injuries. They were all wearing their seatbelts.

Another driver was injured in the crash. Cliff Clendenninig, 32, of Schofield was also treated at Aspirus with non-life threatening injuries. He was not wearing his seatbelt, according to the press release.

Authorities say it's the kind of call that's never easy. "Those are always the most difficult," Wisconsin State Patrol Lt. Steve Krueger said.

Authorities say a vehicle lost control in slippery road conditions and crossed the center line, striking another car.

The crash happened at 8:35 a.m. Thursday on snow-slick County Highway K, just north of Wausau.

"You wonder what if, you know if things would have been a little bit different, little different time, little different place, it wouldn't have happened," Lt. Steve Krueger said.

According to investigators, one of vehicles was carrying a family of four. Three of them were pronounced dead at the scene. The fourth was taken to a nearby hospital.

"We had a crash reconstruction that was on scene and they'll be trying to put together all the pieces, all the circumstances," Lt. Krueger said.

The driver of the second car was also taken to the hospital with unknown injuries. Investigators say this is an unfortunate reminder to be extra cautious when conditions are poor.

"You need to slow down, you need to leave extra time, you need to assume it's going to take you longer to get where you need to go," Lt. Krueger said.

Authorities say the investigation is ongoing.
