Gov. Walker responds to bill supporting Skyward

MARSHFIELD (WAOW) -

Governor Scott Walker is responding after a group of Wisconsin lawmakers introduced a bill to help keep a Stevens Point company in our state. That bill would allow multiple companies to sell information systems to Wisconsin schools.

This comes after Wisconsin awarded a $15 million state-wide contract to a Minnesota-based company over Skyward, which is located in Stevens Point.

Walker says this now applies political pressure to the issue.

"The public in the past has said we don't want a procurement process based on political pressure. We want them based on objective criteria. What you see here, it's increasing that now these people want to apply political pressure on a decision that is otherwise by law is suppose to be set up objective," Governor Scott Walker said.

But Democratic State Representative Katrina Shankland from Stevens Point says she supports the bill and keeping Skyward in Wisconsin.

"We'll be saving money, school districts will have local control, which will give them the authority to choose which vendor is best for their needs and their budget and taxpayers will ultimately win," Shankland said.

Skyward officials tell us they are in the process of filing an appeal. The deadline to do that is tomorrow.
