Toro is a highly trained drug dog. He's been with the Wood County Sheriff's Department more than 2 years. Officials there said he's part of the family.
"It's difficult for everybody. Toro's just like another officer to us, and we're all very concerned," said Lt. Shawn Becker of the Wood County Sheriff's Department.
That's because Toro is missing.
Sheriff's officials said State Patrol asked for a K-9 to check a car in Portage County. During the search, Toro got away from his handler and ran into the woods.
"At this time, he's got a thick coat. He's used to being outside a lot, but the longer he goes without food and water does create a big concern for us," said Lt. Becker.
Toro is a dark brown and black German shepherd. He's about 4 years old, and his leash may still be attached.
Sheriff's Department officials said they really hope to get the dog back.
"It would be a great loss not only for the Sheriff's Department but the community as well. That's why we're out here and have been searching since we lost him," said Lt. Becker.
Officers are focusing their search in the area where Toro ran away, near Johnson Avenue and Highway 54 in Portage County.
