The Marathon County Humane Society has received a check for $1114.82 from the Wisconsin Office of the State Treasurer.
The shelter's Executive Director, Mary Kirlin says, when she received the call this week about the unclaimed money someone bequeathed in a will, she was shocked.
Wisconsin Deputy Treasurer Scott Feldt traveled to Wausau to give the check to the shelter Wednesday morning. He also made a stop to talk about finances with a group of students and teachers.
Feldt says the state issued checks for more than 35-million dollars in unclaimed money in 2012. That is a record. He says they try to raise awareness about the fund by encouraging people to check out the web site that lists unclaimed money: www.wismissingmoney.com
