Toro reports for duty

WOOD COUNTY (WAOW) -

It's five o'clock, and Toro is back on the job. The Wood County K-9 officer reported for duty after a week away.

Toro went missing last Sunday after getting away from his handler. It took almost a dozen crews nearly two days to find him.

"What we did was get him to a vet right away and had him checked over. He was fine, no issues or concerns. So, he's back on duty," said Lt. Shawn Becker of the Wood County Sheriff's Department.

Back on duty, and Sheriff's officers say they're thrilled.

"We invested a lot of time and money in Toro, and we really missed him for that time frame. We're real lucky we found him," said Lt. Becker.

Toro's first day back started off uneventfully. He spent time with his handler getting reacquainted and waiting for a call.

"They bring such a specialty to law enforcement, whether it's, as I mentioned, searching for people, article searches of evidence or drug searches. They expand a lot of what a normal law enforcement officer can do," said Lt. Becker.

With Toro back in the squad car, officers say things feel more complete. They're glad a special part of their department is back in action.

"Toro's one of us. He's part of the department and the community," said Lt. Becker.

Sheriff's Department officials say they're looking into getting tracking collars for their K-9s to prevent them from getting lost.
