Wounded Adams Co. deputy shares story

WISCONSIN RAPIDS (WAOW) -

"I was scared. I didn't… I didn't know what the bullet had hit or nothing like that, and laying on the floor, it was just… just a feeling of helplessness," Adams County Sheriff's Department Deputy Todd Johnson said.

This is how Johnson describes the moments after being shot.

It happened February 19 when he was called to a home in the town of Big Flats to check out some suspicious activity. A man was inside who ended up shooting Johnson and then himself.

"I know it can happen. I know the dangers. That's why you wear a bulletproof vest, you take a gun to work, but it's just something that doesn't happen," Johnson said.

Johnson says he was just doing his job.

"I'm no hero or nothing like that. It's just something I do every day. That's why I like going to work," Johnson said.

Since the shooting, Johnson has been recovering. He says the process has been long and painful, but he's making progress.

"Every day it gets better. I get stronger," Johnson said.

Criminal Justice students at Mid-State Technical College wanted to do something to help Johnson and his family. So, they started a fundraiser selling key chains with his name on it. They're also planning a 5K event in April. All proceeds will go to Johnson and his family.

"I think a lot of community members do really see what law enforcement officers do, and they really do appreciate what they do," said Chris Rozek, Criminal Justice student at MSTC.

Johnson says it's support like this that's helping him and his family make it through his recovery.

"It's incredible what that does to a guy. It really helps me," Johnson said.
