ANTIGO (WAOW) - The Langlade County Sheriff's Department says exposure to the cold is being explored as a reason for a Rhinelander snowmobiler's death, but the exact cause won't be known until toxicology tests are finished.
Robert Ottman, 55, was found next to his snowmobile on private property near Otter Lake about noon last Saturday.
Chief Deputy John Shunke said Wednesday that Ottman was last seen about 8 p.m. last Friday driving in a state Highway 45 ditch near the Oneida-Langlade county line.
Investigators do not know where Ottman was headed, but he was not wearing a helmet or cap and was not traveling on a designated snowmobile trail, Shunke said.
When Ottman was found, his snowmobile was not stuck but he was facing a steep embankment to continue, Shunke said.
"He did have a bottle of beer on his person that was unopened," Shunke said.
Foul play has been ruled out, Shunke said. "There is no damage to the sled. There is no accident."
