TOWN OF BUENA VISTA (WAOW) - The Portage County Sheriff's Department says two men trying to help a disabled pickup truck became trapped Thursday when a driver blinded by the sun plowed into their parked pickup and pushed it into the first truck.
Investigators say both trucks started on fire after the accident. One of the trapped men escaped but the other man needed to be rescued and suffered severe injuries.
The accident happened about 7:30 a.m. when the two men were connecting a tow strap between the trucks on Old Amish Road about one mile west of County Highway EE.
The female driver of the car that started the chain-reaction crash told investigators the sun was in her eyes and she did not see the pickup trucks "until the last second," Lt. Jan Taylor said in a statement.
Investigators say the severely injured man was taken by helicopter to St. Joseph's Hospital in Marshfield. Three other people were treated at the scene.
No other details were immediately released, including how the fire started.
