WAUSAU (WAOW) -

Wausau Police are still sorting through the details, as they try to figure out what led up to a crash on Saturday, that closed Thomas Street for hours.

"Our crash reconstruction team and detective bureau are still working on the exact cause of the crash," said Wausau Police Cpt. Ben Bliven.

Investigators said 24-year-old Michael Dixon of Rothschild was driving well over the 25 mph speed limit and hit the bridge on Thomas Street.

Police said the impact killed him and seriously injured a 4-year-old boy.

"Our crash reconstruction team will do some serious math and try to determine the speed, but it was certainly in excess of the speed limit," said Bliven.

But that's not all.

"We did search the vehicle as part of the investigation, we found a syringe, a spoon and a lighter, that could be drug paraphernalia, so we are looking at that avenue through our investigation," said Bliven.

As they try to determine if it played any role in the crash.

"The paraphernalia would certainly lead us to believe they were used for heroin use," said Bliven.

Police said a crash of this nature, doesn't normally happen on Thomas Street near downtown Wausau.

"It's not that common that you have something that is higher speed, like it was, in the middle of the city," said Bliven.

Wausau Police are not commenting on the child's condition.

We contacted St. Joseph's in Marshfield, officials there said the child is still in critical condition.
