Snowmobile season comes to an end

MINOCQUA (WAOW) -

Snowmobiling season is winding down in our state. The season got off to a slow start, but business owners in the Northwoods say this year was one of the best.

In just a few days the sound of roaring snowmobile engines will be gone.

The season is wrapping up after a roller coaster ride.

"Definitely was slow in the month of January but as the snow came the February business and the March business really picked up," said Buck Drossart, General Manager of The Pointe Hotel and Suites in Minocqua.

Drossart says business suffered at the beginning of the winter.

But when the snow finally arrived ...

"It alleviated some of the pain and it turned out to be a very good winter for us," said Drossart.

Minocqua business leaders say the more snow the Northwoods received, the more business they saw.

"We've seen a lot more traffic certainly for February and in the first part of March, it's been a little bit slower now the last couple of weeks but we still had decent traffic and we were hoping for that to make up for the early slow start," said Kim Baltus, Chamber of Commerce Executive Director.

Drossart is a snowmobiler himself. He says this year's conditions were ideal.

"This year I put more miles on any snowmobile that I ever owned, conditions were excellent," said Drossart.

And a lot of other people are also trying to enjoy it as long as they can.

"It definitely picked up at the end and got much better with all the snow that we got," said Minocqua resident, Drew Prapp.

But as the season wraps up, people here will soon move on from snow, and get ready for warmer activities.

All state snowmobile trails are set to close Sunday March 31st, at midnight.
