WAUTOMA (WAOW) - The Waushara County Sheriff's Department said Monday that a 23-year Marshall woman died and five other people were seriously hurt in a single-vehicle crash that closed a portion of Interstate 39 for hours last weekend.
Lt. Jeff Nett said the crash that killed Mayra Isabell Davila occurred when a sports utility vehicle drifted off the highway and rolled over in the median. The accident happened about 6 a.m. Saturday in the Township of Coloma.
The four men and two women in the 2001 Lincoln SUV were thrown from the vehicle, Nett said.
The occupants, all from southern Wisconsin, ranged in age from 18 to 24, and investigators believe they were were not wearing seat belts, Nett said.
The people hurt were in serious condition Monday in hospitals in Neenah, Marshfield and Madison, Nett said.
Nett said it was unclear who was driving the vehicle. Emergency crews reported smelling alcohol in treating the injured, Nett said.
"We understand they were heading back to Madison," Nett said.
The southbound lanes of I-39 were closed for about four hours immediately after the crash, he said.
