How to help after Boston Marathon blasts

Posted:
MARATHON COUNTY (WAOW) -

It seems when tragedy strikes, heroes emerge.

"The American people refused to be terrorized because what the world saw yesterday in the aftermath of the explosions were stories of heroism and kindness and generosity and love," President Barack Obama said on Tuesday.

Dozens of stories have flooded national media outlets. All of them tales of people helping people. ABC reported cops and medics running to the scene of the bombing, not away from it. Video reports after the blasts show runners crossing the finish line, just to keep running to a nearby hospital they gave blood.

"Those who stayed to tend to the wounded, some tearing off their own clothes to make tourniquets," President Obama said.

But it's not just those in Boston who can help. People here in Central Wisconsin can still do their part.

America Red Cross officials say it's important for people to connect with one another after such a tragedy. That's why they've set up a 'Safe and Well' web site.

Officials say people who have access to a computer can go to the web site and find information about the runners and others hurt in the blast. They say knowing the conditions of those hurt can help ease the stress even of those affected by the tragedy thousands of miles away.

The Red Cross released a statement saying, "our hearts go out to everyone in Boston dealing with this tragedy and our thoughts are with all of those injured."

Red Cross leaders say they have what they need to support this tragedy. But, they say continuing to donate both blood and money can help save lives in future disasters.
