Disturbing new details in Wausau murder

New disturbing details are emerging in a Marathon County murder investigation. A man has now been charged with intentional homicide and trying to hide a body.

Authorities said the victim was in Wausau from St. Paul Minnesota, visiting family.

Wausau police said Tong Hang, 58, was reported missing earlier this month.

Officials say an investigation led them to a home in Wausau, where blood was found in a basement. Now, Kou Thao, 26, is charged in his death.

Thao appeared in court for the first time on Monday after being arrested in Milwaukee. Marathon county prosecutors say Thao killed Hang.

Hang's head was found in the trunk of a car that was reported stolen in Wausau.

"The investigation will still continue. We will continue to get to all the facts and the circumstances that led to the victim's death," said Marathon County Deputy District Attorney Theresa Wetzsteon.

Wausau police believe Thao shot Hang in the head in a Wausau basement on April 6th.

"In this case we're dealing with hiding a corpse as well, so in this case the defendant did take steps to conceal the body," said Wetzsteon.

Court records showed Thao also dismembered Hang. They said body parts were hidden under cushions in a house in Milwaukee. Wetzsteon wouldn't comment on a possible motive. Bond for Thao is set at $1 million dollars.

"With the significant nature of this case, the fact that he does not have a stable residence, the fact that he does have a prior record, it's all in consideration for the court," said Wetzsteon.

Prosecutors say a lot of work still needs to be done.

"Although charges are issued, at this point in time, it is going to be a developing case. The investigation will continue," said Wetzsteon.

Kou Thao's attorney did not want to comment.
