Wis. DNR urges spring cleaners to recycle e-waste

MADISON, Wis. (AP) -- -

Wisconsin environmental officials are urging people to recycle used electronics rather than toss them in the trash as they complete their spring cleaning.

A state Department of Natural Resources survey in 2010 estimated Wisconsin households had 7.4 million televisions, 16 percent of which were unused, and 4.3 million computers, 26 percent of which were unused.

State law prohibits dumping most electronics in landfills. The DNR says the steel, aluminum, plastic and other metals inside electronics are valuable commodities if properly recycled.

People can visit the E-Cycle Wisconsin page on the DNR's website to find an electronics collection event or collection location. The page lists more than 400 collection sites around the state.
