Dozens gather to take back the night

People right here in Central Wisconsin are taking part in a nationwide event to raise awareness about sexual assault. Dozens of people gathered at UW-Marathon County to "Take Back the Night."

"It's a very personal thing so when we have all these people standing together, it shows that we are a force," Rae Schira, Gender and Women's Issues Student Director said.

Historically women faced the anxiety of walking along at night. That's why 33 years ago women started to stand up and speak out about sexual violence. Soon the event became known internationally.

"It's about coming together and supporting victims and letting them know that they're not alone," Women's Community Coordinator Jessica Lind said.

This event falls under sexual assault awareness week. The past few days the Women's Community along with leaders at UWMC have hosted different events.

"We want to let our community know that we don't tolerate sexual assault and we want to ultimately end sexual violence in our community," Lind explained.

According to a national study, one in four women in college have reported being a victim of sexual assault. Leaders say simply raising awareness about the issue can drastically reduce those numbers.

"It's happening here, unfortunately in large numbers in terms of small children, to adults to the elderly and we want people to know that we do support victims," Lind said.

So whether it's here at UWMC or a college campus across the country the goal is the same; to raise awareness, break the silence and take back the night.
