KRONENWETTER (WAOW) -
A nationwide campaign to collect unused and unwanted prescription drugs wrapped up Saturday afternoon.
Several central Wisconsin police departments took part, including the Kronenwetter Police Department and the Rothschild Police Department.
A Lieutenant with Kronenwetter PD told Newsline 9 the event helps people dispose of prescription drugs safely and correctly.
"For the environment. We don't want those things ending up in our landfills and our water systems. And the other reason is it keeps them out of the hands of kids for accidental ingestion," said Lt. Terry McHugh.
He said in the past six months, the department has collected more than 150 pounds of unused prescription drugs.
They were packaged up last night and will be sent to the Drug Enforcement Agency to be destroyed.
Kronenwetter has a 24/7 prescription drug drop box located at the village's municipal building.
