Large firecracker prompts school lockdown

WISCONSIN RAPIDS (WAOW) - Wisconsin Rapids police say a cloudy plastic bag that contained a "large firecracker" and some matches prompted investigators to order all schools locked down for nearly an hour Wednesday as a precaution.

Lt. Brian Krzykowski said a person who picked up the package in the parking lot of the Centralia Center and put it in a waste receptacle called police after thinking the contents were suspicious.

Police and fire officials responded, ordered the lockdown and eventually determined the bag had a large firecracker called an M-80 and it was removed without incident, Krzykowski said in a statement.

Dan Weigand, director of business services for the Wisconsin Rapids School District, said the lockdown for all schools was ordered at 10:47 a.m. and lifted at 11:23 a.m.
