Athletic Park project leaders ask for input about changes

Project leaders are asking for input on upcoming changes to Athletic Park in Wausau.

The owner of the Wisconsin Woodchucks says a two-phase project will knock down the grandstand and build a new one with a similar number of seats. The project will also redo concession stands and the bleachers.

Developers also plan to put in a neighborhood park. But that park will close North Fifth Street.

Project leaders are asking for neighbors' input along the way.

"To recycle old houses and old buildings and old streets takes a lot of money and a lot of intelligence because these houses are already there, these garages are already there, it takes a lot of intelligence and most of all it takes somebody with a financial ability to redevelop along with you," said Wausau City Council member, Bill Nagle.

Other people at the meeting expressed concern about parking and accessing their garages when the street closes. Project leaders told neighbors they'll try to work out those issues.

Construction is scheduled to begin in August.
