Spring is in full bloom at Brenda Koshollek's greenhouse in Hatley.
But for this gardener, flowers aren't for decoration. They're for expression.
"Anybody can have some geraniums and a spike and it looks nice, but does it portray your character? Your personality?" Koshollek told Newsline 9.
Brenda and her husband Jack operate Majestic Farms, 6301 Townline Road, Hatley. It's a landscape and greenhouse facility Koshollek built when trying to customize her home landscaping.
"I decided I was going to start my own plants so I could choose what colors I wanted and so I started behind the house with a couple of saw horses and plastic," Koshollek said.
And today this hobby has bloomed into an operation spanning seven greenhouses. Each of which Koshollek says she uses to teach and share her love of gardening.
"We try to focus on things here that people can learn to do themselves. That people can learn to do themselves. They can bring their pots and can plant them here, so they don't have the mess at home," Koshollek said.
Koshollek hosts workshops at the greenhouse on gardening topics throughout the year, many at no cost to participants.
"And they've kind of made it a fun thing, the can come out with a group of friends. We also work with the school garden in Hatley, teaching kids how to grow their own vegetables," Koshollek said.
One area of speciality Majestic Farms incorporates into their landscape features, are species of plants native to the climate of Wisconsin.
"They respond well even if there's a drought, they can handle years that are wetter," Koshollek said.
And that's a great excuse to get outside with what nature has to offer.
The next garden workshop at Majestic Farms is Saturday May, 11. There is no cost but pre-registration is required by calling 715-446-3873. From Highway 29, take exit 181 (County Road Q) southbound. Bear right onto County Lane, and then take a left onto Townline Road. The farm is located on the right side of the road.
