WAUSAU (WAOW) - Wausau police say a seven-year-old girl was bitten in the face by a pit bull after the girl got too close to the dog in the backyard they shared.
The two-year-old dog named Spike was tied to an eight-foot chain when the incident happened about 5 p.m. Sunday on Wausau's east side, Capt. Byan Hilts said.
A 12-year-old girl warned the younger girl she was getting too close to dog, which was tied up in a backyard that the dog's owner and the girl's family shared because they live in a duplex, Hilts said.
"She yelled to get away from it but it was too late. The dog lunged at her and bit her in the face," Hilts said.
The girl was rushed to a hospital by ambulance after the incident, he said.
The dog's owner, a 31-year-old woman, was issued city citations for failure to have the dog licensed and failure to provide proof the dog had been vaccinated for rabies, Hilts said.
The dog was taken to the Marathon County Humane Society where it is quarantined, Hilts said Monday.
