Woodson YMCA: A Noon Ball Tradition

Posted:

Every day in YMCA's across the country, pick up basketball games take place at 12pm, coining the term "noon ball."

Throughout the past 50 or 60 years, Wausau's Woodson YMCA has developed strong noon ball tradition.

That tradition hasn't changed much, and some of the players haven't either.

They started coming to noon ball over 40 years ago, and despite their age, they're still coming to play. There's a group of about 15 guys over the age of 50 that just aren't ready to hang it up.

"I can't probably walk too good tomorrow," says 59 year old, Mark Loppnow. "I need a hip replacement but I'm putting that off so I can keep playing basketball. Once I have the hip replacement there's no more basketball. It's coming soon."

The saying goes, 'you're only as old as you feel.' For these guys, noon ball keeps them feeling pretty young.

"They don't want to get old (haha), at least they don't want to think they're getting old," jokes YMCA employee Scott Kapus. "They just enjoy it. I think it's the camaraderie. Just getting together with a bunch of guys and having fun."

The younger guys don't expect it, but these old timers are actually able to keep up.

62 year old Wayne Christianson says he likes the reaction of the younger players when he scores on them.

"They usually look at you like, 'you gotta be kidding me?' But after you hit a couple here and there, they just respect you for being out here."

They can't explain why the noon ball tradition has continued for so long, but the older guys are certainly glad to still be a part of it.

"I can't put my finger on it but I know that everybody really enjoys coming down here," raves Loppnow. "It's a lot of fun kidding around with all the other guys at the Y. It's a great time."
