Members of the D.C. Everest fishing team believe that casting a lure is a luxury that everyone should be entitled to. Because of that, every year they host a special event at the Kort Street Boat landing in Schofield. This year more than 100 people attended.
15 members of the D.C. Everest fishing team volunteered their time to assist kids and adults with special needs, and share their love for the sport.
That passion caught on quickly.
17-year-old Alexis Sterzinger was so excited when she caught her first fish - she burst into tears.
"I started bawling." she said. "I was like. 'that was my first fish!'"
While the sport of fishing may bring confidence, organizers at the special needs fishing outing say that it doesn't revolve around catching fish; it's mainly meant to get kids out of the house.
The outing offered boat rides, a picnic lunch, and and fishing from the shore. But the main goal was to enjoy the outdoors and provide an uplifting experience.
