Marshfield woman heads to Oklahoma to help

WAUSAU (WAOW) -

As people in Oklahoma work to rebuild after an EF-5 tornado blew through the state, volunteers from all over Wisconsin are headed there to help. That includes a Marshfield woman who's hoping to make a difference.

When disasters strike, Laura Krause says she feels the need to help.

"It's just a good feeling to give to the community and give to the people that need it," Krause said.

Krause is a certified Red Cross volunteer. During the past year, she's seen a lot.

"My first deployment was for Hurricane Sandy in New Jersey, then to help with Sandy in New York and most recently I went to west Texas for the explosion," Krause explained.

Now, she's headed to Oklahoma.

"I'll be working in client services so we will help the clients, listen to their stories, and get them what they need."

Krause began her work in college, "I've just been interested in helping people."

A few years ago, when the American Red Cross was looking for volunteers to help survivors of Hurricane Sandy, Krause didn't hesitate.

"There's no big wow moments, there's just little moments that bring you joy."

Now she says she's ready for a new challenge, and a new chance to help the people who need it most.

"When you lay your head on your pillow at night you hoped that you've made a difference in someone's life."

But she knows the job won't be easy. Last week's tornado swept away almost everything in its path, leaving thousands of people with nothing.

"Just to be able to meet the people and hear their stories and help them work through the tragedy is a highlight," Krause explained.

She isn't the only person from Wisconsin willing to lend a hand. Red Cross leaders say roughly 25 people from the state have been deployed to Oklahoma, and they are still recruiting more volunteers.

As for Krause, she says this trip is another opportunity to do good. Something she says she'll never get tired of.
