WAUSAU (WAOW) - A new logo for Wausau that's been more than a year in the making and is already being used will have to wait a little longer before getting final approval from the city council.
On Tuesday, the council voted 7-4 to table a resolution to retire the "Welcome Home to Wausau" logo and replace it with one called "Cityscape," which features the downtown skyline.
Alderman Bill Nagle said Wednesday he proposed the delay because he wants more discussion on whether the new logo will be used exclusively on all signs.
Some signs, such as those welcoming people to the city or announcing the location of the kayak park, may need more than just the logo, Nagle said.
"I want to make sure we are smart about this," he said.
According to the resolution tabled Tuesday, the "Welcome Home to Wausau" logo was adopted in March 1993.
The city contracted with Adrenalign Marketing of Wausau in February 2012 to develop a new logo to enhance economic development efforts, the resolution said.
In February, 20 municipal leaders, planners, marketing experts and business owners met to discuss a new "signage system" in the region, and in May the "Cityscape" logo was used in new signs for miles of bike paths, the resolution said.
The plan is to use the new logo on city vehicles, equipment, signs and stationary "as replacement is needed" and to promote events, the resolution said.
The resolution said the new logo would "maintain integrity" of the city's so-called brand and be "a constant message advertising the city uniformly."
Mayor Jim Tipple said Wednesday the current logo was tired and needed "some refreshing." The Cityscape version, which symbolizes both the skyline and the Wisconsin River, was put on business cards months ago, is used on the city newsletter and is on signs at the city business park, the mayor said.
"We are moving ahead with implementing it," he said. "Until just official approval of this, we haven't had any negative comments."
