Homeowners in Marshfield terrorized by "Drano Bombs"

MARSHFIELD (WAOW) -

Some Marshfield neighborhoods have been terrorized by what police call "Drano Bombs."

"It seems like every summer we have a series of these things being set off in neighborhoods," said Gary Jepsen, Marshfield Police Chief.

The homemade bombs are typically made by children and young adults according to investigators.

Often these bombs are inspired by videos posted on YouTube.

"Just picture your mother, your sister, or your little brother going up to one of these devices and not knowing what it is," added Jepson.

One father in Marshfield saw for himself what happens with these bombs.

"I didn't know what they were at the time but you could tell they had exploded, the bottles had been blown up," said Jonas.

Jonas adds that he woke up on Sunday morning, and discovered two big brown spots in the yard.

"I went out and did some yard work and found two exploded, what came to be Drano bombs," added Jonas.

The spots where the bombs exploded were still visible on Wednesday, as evidence of the heat and violence.

"I have a 5 year old daughter and an 8 year old son, curious, and I would hate to know what would happen if they found one of those that had not set off yet," said Jonas.

The juveniles behind the makeshift bombs, authorities say, are failing to realize how severe the consequences can be.

"It could be anywhere from disorderly conduct, creating a breach of the peace within a public setting, all the way up to possession of explosive devices," said Jepson.

According to authorities, a Drano bomb can have a blast radius of nearly 50 feet.

Police say that's powerful enough to severely injure people.

Marshfield police say they arrested a man several years ago and he was convicted of making Drano bombs.

That arrest landed him in prison.
