People from around the world have traveled to Wausau to hit the water at Whitewater Park, located just a few blocks from downtown.
Paddlers of all ages compete on the kayaking course. Organizers told Newsline 9 it's a rare opportunity for many.
"It's very unique," said Wausau Whitewater Operations Coordinator Margie Wenzel.
Erin Achatz, 11, has been paddling for years. She said she can't wait to learn new skills and work on her technique this season.
"There's no water around here that's as good as this, so it's really awesome to get out on this," she said. "It's just like really, really fun surfing in that because then you get to flip over and roll back up and it's nice to cool off in the summer."
Organizers said the rush, and the challenging course keep paddlers like Achatz coming back.
"There isn't anything like this anywhere else in the country," said Wenzel.
And you don't have to be experienced to try the course. Organizers told us anyone can sign up for lessons, which are offered throughout the summer.
"They'll bring the equipment, you just show up and we'll get you all geared up and on the water. They're excellent...It's very individualized lessons based on what your skill level is," said Wenzel.
But be careful, Achatz said once you try the sport, it's easy to get hooked.
"I'm going to keep doing this because it is so fun once you start doing it. You can't stop," said Achatz.
